Shiny Darkly – The Other Man
Bij toeval tegen gekomen tijdens mijn Youtube ontdekkingsreizen, op zoek naar nieuwe muziek. Jonge band uit Denemarken. In Kopenhagen, zitten veel jonge bands, (ook Trentemoller uit Kopenhagen, Agnes Obel). De alternatieve scene is niet groot, maar er gebeurt wél veel.
Er is ruimte om je als band te ontwikkelen, je kunt veel spelen en er wordt veel over muziek geschreven. Aldus zanger/gitarist Kristoffer Bach. het is aan de andere kant wel weer vrij competitief. Wat zijn voor- en nadelen heeft.”
De sound van de band is vrij authentiek, sterk en toch basic. Hun setup is vrij simpel, maar de mix van geluiden maakt het tot iets eigens. Vooral de synthesizer is belangrijk voor hun geluid, terwijl je in dit nummer vooral in effecten verzopen gitaren hoort. Er zit in ieder geval veel energie en kracht in hun nummers, ook dit nummer. De clip is overigens ook leuk, de zanger zingt het nummer, in Cowboy tenue, tijdens een avond van de lokale line-dance vereniging
Aux Animaux – The War
Aux Animaux is a Synth / Dark Wave act from Stockholm. We are featuring her song ‘The War’, but she also has a new album out this week which is worth checking out:
De clip van Black Holes doet overigens denken aan Twin peaks seizoen 3. Een optreden, met de rode gordijnen van de Red Room erachter. Elke aflevering eindigt in de Bang Bang bar met een optreden van o.a. Chromatics, Nine Inch Nails, Eddie Vedder etc. Houd je van vaag, en sfeer: kijken!
‘The War’ came into existence because I have been a vegan for quite some time, and I wanted to be a voice to all animals in captivity in my own way. I think music is a great way to reach people. I also borrowed footage from an animal rights group in Sweden to strengthen the message. It’s not that I expect people to go and become vegan after seeing or hearing it, but if one can plant a seed in a person’s mind and get them to think about animal rights, that’s always something. The best place for this song is when I play it live shows, then I can get the attention of a big crowd and I always say a word or two about the song afterwards. I hope it will make them question the choices we make every day and think about how the animals have to live their lives because of these choices they make. Do they really need to make these choices? Can they change them? What are the consequences?

De Brassers – En Toen Was Er Niets Meer
De Brassers is (of was, dat is niet helemaal duidelijk) een Vlaamse punkband afkomstig uit Hamont, in het Noorden van Belgisch Limburg. Hun naam hadden ze volgens gitarist Willy Dirkx te danken aan het scheldwoord “brassers”. De muzikanten besloten de naam te gebruiken als geuzennaam, omdat het volgende de gitarist “iets vrolijks had, in tegenstelling tot onze muziek”.
Het uiterlijk van de band, de nihilistische attitude en ook de muziek zelf zorgde al snel voor controverse, en het bekladden van de plaatselijke kerk met hun naam (dader onbekend) hielp ook al niet mee. Maar goed, blijkbaar deden ze wel iets goeds want Britse muziekblad New Musical Express schreef over hen: mean and moody modern chaps
In 1982 splitte de groep omdat bepaalde leden te zwaar kampten met drugsproblemen (je verwacht het niet) maar blijkbaar kan je daar oud mee worden want in 2005 stonden ze geprogrammeerd op Pukkelpop naast andere kleine bandjes als The Prodigy, Pixies en Nick Cave.
Het nummer dat ik wil laten horen komt al uit 1981 maar heeft niets aan actualiteitswaarde verloren want een titel als ‘En toen was er niets meer’ kan slaan op de duistere jaren 80 van de vorige eeuw, maar kan net zo goed betrekking hebben op de lege schappen met toiletpapier van de supermarkten een paar weken geleden.
High Functioning Flesh – Self Management
Agressie uit Los Angeles.
Het is Industrial maar nog meer EBM. Het genre van Skinny Puppy, Frontline Assebly en natuurlijk Front 242. Electronic Body Music, omdat de muziek een fysieke reactie oproept, krachtig en levendig is. Rauw. Vandaar ook de bandnaam “high functioning Flesh” àlichamelijk.
Industrial begon in de vroege Jaren ’80 en heeft zich tot in de jaren ’90 getransformeerd naar een genre waarin er meer house/techno aspecten in de muziek terecht kwamen. Dat ging eigenlijk steeds meer weg van de initiële rauwheid van het genre. Denk aan Combichrist en bijvoorbeeld Pete Crane (you are not your body) uit de nieuwere lichting EBM. Wat High Functioning Flesh doet, is terug naar de basis en een frisse blik op EBM geven.
Dus: agressieve teksten/vocalen over koude ritmes, drumpatterns. Dit is, Self Management. Zie je zelf maar eens te managen met deze energie.
In Letter Form – Terror (is a state of mind)
In Letter Form is een darkwave/post punk band uit San Francisco. Eric Miranda was de zanger, speelde keyboard en gitaar en was daarnaast ook nog eens wiskunde leraar. Het is duidelijk te horen dat hij was geïnspireerd door onder andere Joy Division, The Cure, New Order, Echo & the Bunnymen, Bauhaus, the Smiths. Een prachtige stem begeleid door muziek die kan worden omschreven als “they produce a sound that echoes the past, haunts the present and is constantly in the future.
Maar ik zei dus dat Eric Miranda de zanger ‘was’ want hoewel de band nog bestaat en optreed, is Eric Miranda helaas in 2016 overleden. Eric zei over hun muziek: “We are sentimental about the way we go about writing songs and performing them, we want listeners to hear a close approximation of our truth.”
Eric Miranda, singer/guitarist/keyboardist and even math teacher, was initially inspired in his teens by the charismatic and unique vocals of Ian Curtis and Robert Smith, but over the time he was able to develop and forge his own signature, a hypnotic singing style.
Eric’s lyrics deal with the naked and harsh essence of human life, the dark and the light, and were centred around a sense of loss: loss of innocence, love, hope, joy, friendship, relationship and tragically… life.
Foetus – Throne of Agony
Foetus, Jim Thirlwell, is an Australian guy who moved to London in 1978, where he played with the post-punk band prag VEC and formed the first of his numerous musical projects, Foetus.
In the 1980s, under the pseudonyms Clint Ruin and Frank Want, he contributed to various releases by Nurse With Wound, Marc Almond, The The and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
He co-wrote “Wings Off Flies” on From Her to Eternity, the first Bad Seeds album but Thirlwell’s time in the band was cut short, in part, by a clash between Thirlwell’s highly structured studio routine, contrasting with Cave’s at-the-time habit of “shambling through it” while recording.
Thirlwell was part of and toured with The Immaculate Consumptive (Lydia Lunch, Nick Cave and Marc Almond) Thirlwell eventually settled in New York City, where he is still based. Since his move he has released several singles, fourteen EPs (including Stinkfist, with fellow New York artist Lydia Lunch and Thurston Moore), and seventeen full-length albums.
Thirlwell has remixed and produced numerous pieces for artists including Faith No More, Nine Inch Nails, Pantera, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The The, Zola Jesus and Swans. He has also done voice-over work for MTV and other entities and write soundtracks for several movies and series, notably the music for the warmly recommended and fairly brilliant adult animated series Archer which you can find on Netflix
